"The first Inward Bound program was created by Jane Fryer in 1992, who drew upon her years of experience teaching yoga in Washington, D.C., and working with the body's natural energy systems to create a holistic approach to rejuvenation.
In 1996 she was joined by
Jennifer Harvey, whose classes in mind/body
exercise and meditation are a perfect complement
to Jane's work. Jennifer is a Boston
psychotherapist and now the owner of the Laughing
Dog Yoga Studio in Cambridge.
In addition to the 'core
program' offered by Jane and Jennifer, Jane also
partners with other exceptional teachers to offer
more intensive yoga programs.
There are two options:
the Inward Bound
Core Program, or our Yoga
Immersion. An important aspect of
both the core and immersion experience is personal
space and time. Your days are free to resonate
with the soul of Mother Nature, as you begin to
remember and align with her rhythms to soothe
the pulse of your heart of hearts. Our locations
vary from rustic to elegant, near and far; but
always inward bound. This is the heart of all
our trips.
The Core Program
Using more than forty years
of combined experience, Jane and Jennifer assist
one another in all the classes, and their teaching
styles offer participants a seamless integration
of information and experience in a way that is
refreshing and fun, as well as deeply healing
and revitalizing.
Meditation
The day begins with meditation. The methods,
purposes, and benefits of meditation are taught
and experienced in a way that is simple, yet profound.
Yoga
Next, a yoga class, emphasizing the development
of strength as well as flexibility, with attention
to proper alignment and enhanced breathing. We then break for a delicious, healthy, energizing
breakfast.
Nia (Neuro-muscular Integrative Action)
After being nourished, we are ready for NIA. Nia
(neuro-muscular integrative action) is
a fabulous aerobic workout that combines yoga,
dance, tai chi, and other martial arts in a way
that is inspiring, fun, and integrative of mind,
body, and spirit.
According to Jennifer Harvey,
"As a psychotherapist, Nia is a vehicle where
I can share my passion for growth and for facilitating
others toward their own unique transformation.
"Through the expressive
movement of Nia, the light body shimmers while
shaking up the shadow. This opens the portal
into the present moment where the voice of the
heart echoes the compassion of the soul.
All of this is surrounded by the Light of Spirit.
"In addition, Nia is also a challenging,
heart pumping workout. Simply said, Nia is truly
a spiritual sweat."
Pilates
We then have many hours of
free time to enjoy the natural surroundings, to
be alone, to be with family or friends.
Local adventures, such as hiking, kayaking, snorkeling,
rappelling, or horseback riding can be arranged,
as well as massages, facials, and other services.
In the late afternoon, we offer Pilates
mat exercises that emphasize core strengthening
in a balanced and efficient way.
Restorative Yoga
Pilates is followed by restorative yoga, an inwardly
directed class meant to restore, revive, and revitalize.
It is effortless and extraordinarily relaxing,
and it has major benefits for all psychophysical
systems.
